Kathmandu, Oct 4: The Nepali Congress begins its 15th General Convention in Kathmandu today, bringing together around 7,700 delegates to elect a new leadership and set the party’s political and organisational course.
The opening ceremony will begin at 2 pm at Khula Manch. The convention is being held under the slogan, “Respect for Tradition and Commitment to Change: A Strong Congress as the Alternative for a Prosperous Nepal.”
The party says the convention will focus on strengthening internal democracy, improving its organisation and redefining its role amid Nepal’s changing political landscape.
Originally scheduled for October 2 to 5 (Asoj 16 to 19), the convention was postponed after heavy rainfall, floods and landslides disrupted life across the country.
Under the revised schedule, closed sessions will be held on October 5 and 6 (Asoj 19 and 20), followed by elections for the new leadership on October 7 and 8 (Asoj 21 and 22).
Delegates include representatives from House of Representatives and provincial assembly constituencies, local party committees and the party’s Nepali public relations committees abroad.
The Congress plans to keep the convention modest because of the recent disasters. It has opted against elaborate arrangements and encouraged digital publicity to reduce spending on posters, leaflets and other printed materials. Meals will be provided to delegates at Bhrikutimandap, while domestic delegates must arrange and pay for their own accommodation.
The convention will discuss the party’s political direction, organisational structure, leadership responsibilities and contemporary national issues. Good governance, economic development, employment, the expectations of younger generations and citizens’ everyday concerns are also expected to feature in discussions.
The convention slogan reflects the Congress’s effort to balance its historical role in Nepal’s democratic movements with pressure for organisational and leadership change.
The five day gathering will conclude after the leadership elections, leaving the newly elected team with the task of strengthening the party organisation, rebuilding public confidence and translating its pledge for change into action.
