Kathmandu, Sept 28: Continuous rainfall, floods and landslides have disrupted traffic on dozens of highways and roads across Nepal, forcing authorities to completely close some routes and restrict night travel on others.
According to the Nepal Police, the Narayangarh-Muglin road in Chitwan has been closed to all vehicles until further notice. The Prithvi Highway in Dhading has also been blocked after landslides carrying large boulders struck Krishnabhir in Benighat Rorang Rural Municipality and Gajuri.
In Kavre, landslides have blocked the BP Highway at Charsaybesi and Gimdibesi in Roshi Rural Municipality. The Araniko Highway has also been obstructed at Pakucha in Dhulikhel.
In Rasuwa, erosion by the Trishuli River has badly damaged the Trishuli Mailung Syabrubesi road. With sections of the Pasang Lhamu Highway also eroded, travellers can use the alternative Kathmandu Tokha Chhahare Bidur route to reach Syabrubesi, although parts of it are unpaved and single-lane.
Authorities have imposed night travel restrictions on several highways because of continued landslide risks. Restrictions are in place on the Tokha Chhahare road in Nuwakot, Mid Hill Highway in Bhojpur, Siddhicharan Highway in Solukhumbu, Katari Ghurmi road in Udayapur and BP Highway in Sindhuli.
Night traffic has also been restricted on roads in Dolakha, Kavre, Sindhupalchok, Manang, Kaski, Mustang and Myagdi.
In Makwanpur, authorities have introduced time slots for passenger and freight vehicles using the Tribhuvan Highway after disruptions on the Prithvi and Kanti highways increased traffic pressure. Heavy freight vehicles exceeding specified length and weight limits have been banned, except those carrying fuel and LPG.
Several important routes in Gandaki Province remain blocked. Landslides have closed the Chame Besisahar road in Manang and the Beni Jomsom road in Myagdi. The Jomsom Korala road in Mustang has also been blocked by landslides and mudflows.
In Baglung, landslides have disrupted the Mid Hill Highway and Kaligandaki Corridor. Roads in Gulmi have also been affected by floods and landslides, while the Siddhartha Highway has been blocked in Syangja and Palpa. Multiple landslides have obstructed the Prithvi Highway in Tanahun.
Elsewhere, the Ghorahi Thabang Rukum Martyrs Highway in Rolpa, Karnali Highway in Kalikot, Karnali Corridor in Humla and Mahakali Highway in Darchula have been affected. Doti authorities have temporarily banned traffic throughout the district because of the risk posed by continued rainfall.
The Kanti Highway in Lalitpur, Besisahar Manang road in Lamjung and Kaligandaki Corridor in East Nawalparasi have also been blocked.
Police said rainfall, floods, landslides, erosion and road subsidence continue to affect transportation across the country.
