Kathmandu, September 26: Prime Minister Balendra Shah (Balen) is returning home today after attending the 81st United Nations General Assembly.
PM Shah left for the United States on Tuesday evening to attend the General Assembly. He addressed the General Assembly on September 24.
During his participation in the General Assembly, PM Shah also held meetings with representatives of various countries and members of the international community. He presented Nepal’s priorities and views on cooperation with the international community at the General Assembly.
Addressing the General Assembly Shah presented the recent Bhotekoshi–Trishuli flood in Nepal as an example of the crises being triggered by climate change. Drawing the international community’s attention to the growing risks in the Himalayan region, he said that countries like Nepal, which have contributed little to creating the climate crisis, are paying a heavy price for it.
Saying that “climate change knows no borders,” he said that risks such as melting glaciers, landslides and floods are spreading across Nepal as well as China and India.
He said climate justice should not be limited to financial assistance. “Climate justice is not merely a matter of money; it is a matter of distributive justice and procedural justice,” he said, stressing that questions of who bears the cost of the climate crisis and whose voice is heard are important.
He said the voices of Himalayan communities, small island nations, landlocked and least developed countries, and future generations should also be given equal importance in international decision-making processes.
During his participation in the General Assembly, Shah also held meetings with representatives of various countries and members of the international community.
