Kathmandu, September 25: According to a bulletin issued by the Meteorological Forecasting Division on Friday evening, the country is currently under the partial influence of both monsoon winds and westerly winds. A low-pressure system located over northern Maharashtra and around Chhattisgarh in India is moving north-northwestward and is expected to weaken within the next 24 hours.
On Friday night, most places in the mountainous areas of Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces, as well as many places in the mountainous and hilly areas of Koshi and Bagmati provinces, are likely to receive moderate rainfall and snowfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. Rain is also expected in some hilly and Tarai areas of Gandaki, Lumbini, Sudurpaschim and Karnali provinces.
According to the Division, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at a few places in Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces. In particular, one or two places in Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces have been warned of extremely heavy rainfall. Gusty winds are also likely in some parts of Madhesh Province and the Tarai areas of Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces.
The Division has also clarified the classification of rainfall intensity and coverage. According to meteorologists, rainfall exceeding 200 millimetres within 24 hours is classified as extremely heavy rainfall. Similarly, rainfall expected over more than 80 percent of an area is classified as rainfall occurring at most places.
