Kathmandu, Oct 30: The United Nations General Assembly has unanimously approved a proposal to extend the preparatory period for Nepal and Bangladesh to graduate from the list of Least Developed Countries (LDCs) until November 24, 2029.
The decision was taken at the 81st session of the UN General Assembly at its headquarters in New York. Resolution 81/L.8 was unanimously adopted, extending the preparatory period for the graduation of both countries, according to Nepal’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York.
The decision gives Nepal additional time to carry out structural and institutional reforms more effectively before graduating from the LDC category.
Nepal said it would use the extended period to strengthen productive capacity, reinforce institutions and accelerate economic and social transformation.
The country will also focus on implementing its Smooth Transition Strategy, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Doha Programme of Action to ensure a smooth transition after graduation.
The additional time is expected to help Nepal achieve its goal of graduating from the LDC category in a smooth, sustainable and irreversible manner.
Nepal’s Permanent Mission expressed gratitude to all UN member states for their continued cooperation, solidarity and support in securing the decision.
