FNJ asks the government to stop state terror

Kathmandu, October 30: The Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) has urged the government to immediately stop the practice of detaining journalists directly from their newsrooms.

FNJ General Secretary Ram Prasad Dahal has stated that police entering newsrooms and taking journalists into custody as ‘state terror.’

‘It appears that a sudden wave of state terror has begun. Uniformed police officers entering newsrooms and detaining journalists is a violation of Nepal’s Constitution, press freedom and international laws,’ General Secretary Dahal said.

‘This must be stopped immediately. If this state terror does not stop, there will be no alternative but to launch a protest against this deplorable practice.’

On Friday, police detained Bishwamani Subedi, a journalist working for Nepal Press, directly from the newsroom of his office in New Baneshwor.

Similarly, five civil dressed police officers arrived at the office of Naya Patrika Daily. According to Naya Patrika Editor Khagendra Panta, the police had gone to the office seeking to take correspondent Nawaraj Mainali to the Cyber Bureau.

Likewise, police detained Shobharaj Baral, a journalist, on Friday afternoon. The FNJ has expressed serious concern over the detention of journalists working for different media outlets on the same day and the police entering their offices, urging the government to immediately put an end to such practices.
