German mountaineer falls to death

Kathmandu, Oct 27: A German climber died after falling while descending Mount Ama Dablam in Solukhumbu district on Monday.

The climber had reached the summit of the 6,814 metre peak on Sunday and was making his way down when the accident occurred.

Gokul Thapa, chief of Real Himalaya Pvt Ltd, said the climber fell around 1,500 metres during the descent.

A search team recovered his body on Monday. It will be flown to Kathmandu by helicopter for a postmortem examination, Thapa said.

Ama Dablam, located in the Everest region, is a popular climbing destination for both Nepali and foreign mountaineers. More than 300 climbers have obtained permits to scale the mountain during the ongoing autumn climbing season.

Last week, two Japanese climbers also died on another mountain in western Nepal.
