Prachanda rules out immediate unity with UML

Kathmandu, Oct 24: Nepali Communist Party (NCP) Coordinator Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda has ruled out immediate unification with the CPN UML, saying the two parties have different political orientations, though they could cooperate on national issues.

Speaking to journalists on Saturday at the launch of his party’s ‘Party Awakening Campaign’ at its central office in Paris Danda, Prachanda said cooperation with other political forces remained possible to protect national sovereignty, democratic rights and national interests.

“We are ready to cooperate with anyone, if necessary, to safeguard national sovereignty, democratic rights and the interests of the country. However, this does not mean that we will unify with the CPN UML,” he said.

He also sought to dispel doubts about the continuity of the Maoist movement. He said the NCP was formed through the merger of 26 communist groups of different sizes, including the then CPN (Maoist Centre) and the CPN (Unified Socialist).

He said the merger brought their ideologies and political aspirations under one party. Although the party’s name had changed several times since the peace process began, its political direction and pro-people agenda remained unchanged, he added.

Prachanda also criticised the alliance between the Nepali Congress (NC) and the CPN UML, accusing the two largest parliamentary parties of joining forces to remove his party from government when it was pursuing good governance, social justice and prosperity.

“We had already warned that an alliance between the Nepali Congress and the CPN UML could lead the country into a crisis,” he said.

He reiterated that his party remained open to political cooperation whenever national interests and democratic rights required it but ruled out interpreting such cooperation as a step towards unification with the UML.
