Bhandari calls for global action on climate justice

Kathmandu, Oct 25: Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari has called on the international community to address Nepal’s demand for climate justice, pointing to the natural disasters that have struck the country this year.

Speaking at the 2026 Global Governance Forum (Xiong’an), organised by the Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs, Bhandari urged Nepal, China and India to work together to protect the Himalayas and reduce climate risks, according to her secretariat.

She called for joint glacier monitoring, the exchange of meteorological data, stronger early warning systems and coordinated disaster response across the region. She also urged the United Nations and international financial institutions to provide reliable support to countries facing climate risks.

Bhandari said global efforts should focus on building communities that can withstand climate disasters while ensuring environmentally sustainable and inclusive development.

On global governance, she advocated an international order guided by international law rather than the use of power. She called for reforms to make the United Nations and other global institutions more representative, inclusive, transparent and effective.

Ending poverty and hunger, improving human well being and redirecting resources spent on arms races towards development should be shared global priorities, she said.

Bhandari also highlighted the longstanding cultural and people to people ties between Nepal and China. She reaffirmed Nepal’s commitment to the One China Policy and stressed the need to respect national sovereignty and territorial integrity, calling for dialogue to address international challenges.
