The former Bulgarian communist party was heading for defeat according to first estimates of election results Monday, but the power base of the dominant UDF opposition party remained uncertain.
The former communist standing as the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) who won the first free elections in June 1990, have had a hand on power for 47 years.
But latest estimates showed that they had won about 33.33 percent the vote in Sunday’s general election, compared with between 34.4 percent and 36.57 percent for the Union of democratic Force (UDF) party.
