Kathmandu, Oct 14: Police have begun an internal inquiry into a publicly circulated audio recording in which Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Khagendra Sunar allegedly uses abusive language against a woman.
The recording, purportedly of a conversation between Sunar and the woman, leaked on Monday. The RSP has also launched an internal investigation.
On Thursday, the party directed Sunar to refrain from attending public events. It said its disciplinary commission had begun investigating him.
Police Headquarters began looking into the matter after the audio became public. Central police spokesperson DIG Abinarayan Kafle said police were checking its authenticity.
“We learned about the audio through news reports and social media. We are looking into it in our own way,” Kafle said.
He said police would need a complaint from the woman to arrest Sunar and conduct a formal investigation.
“The woman must file a complaint in some form, either in person or online. Without her complaint, we cannot initiate an investigation ourselves,” he said. The woman has not filed a complaint at any police office so far.
