1,000 tourists, support staff await rescue after Budhigandaki floods

Kathmandu, Oct 14: Around 1,000 tourists and their support staff remain stranded in areas affected by the Budhigandaki floods and are awaiting rescue, according to the Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN).

In a notice issued Tuesday, TAAN said tourists and support staff were stranded in and around tourism hubs along the Syar Khola and Budhigandaki river corridors, including Chumchet, Lokpa, Nyakphedi, Philim, Sirdibas, Salleri, Jagat and Machhakhola.

More than 400 foreign tourists and around 600 support staff are believed to be stranded. TAAN has requested details of those who have yet to be rescued by the government and whose trekking agencies have been unable to arrange rescues because of insurance restrictions.

The association said it would draw up a plan based on the information received and begin rescue efforts on Wednesday.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, which operates under the Home Ministry, had earlier clarified that no additional permission was required to arrange private rescues for tourists.
