RSP bars Sunar from official events pending inquiry

KATHMANDU, Oct 13: The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has ordered lawmaker Khagendra Sunar to stay away from formal events in his public capacity while its Central Disciplinary Commission investigates allegations involving women’s dignity, threats, improper pressure and suspicious financial dealings.

In a statement issued Tuesday, the party said media reports, publicly released audio recordings and questions about Sunar’s conduct had prompted it to launch an internal inquiry.

The restriction will remain in place until the commission reaches a conclusion. The party said the measure aimed to prevent interference with the investigation and uphold the ethical standards expected of people holding public office.

Describing the allegations as serious and sensitive, the RSP urged relevant state agencies to conduct an immediate, independent and impartial investigation based on facts. It pledged cooperation with any such inquiry.

The party said its commitment to the rule of law, good governance and accountability required it to take complaints against members and elected representatives seriously.

It reiterated its policy of zero tolerance toward mistreatment of women, criminal offenses and breaches of the standards of public office. Further action, it said, would depend on the findings of both the internal inquiry and investigations by state agencies.

Sunar has recently drawn attention for raising corruption allegations against police officials. In September, he demanded an investigation into Nepal Police Inspector General Dan Bahadur Karki and questioned why the government had not acted on complaints against him.

Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal subsequently ordered portions of Sunar’s September 11 remarks about Karki removed from the parliamentary record.

Tuesday’s statement concerns allegations against Sunar himself. It announced an investigation and restrictions on his participation in formal events, without declaring him guilty.

Reaffirming that no one was above the law, the RSP said it would not offer political protection to anyone found to have broken the law or violated public office standards.
