Immigration expands foreign national tracking system nationwide

Bhaktapur, Oct 13: The Department of Immigration has expanded its Foreign Nationals Management Information System nationwide to monitor foreign nationals’ activities and manage and facilitate their travel in Nepal.

Speaking at an orientation program on the system in Nagarkot today, department director Shiva Lamsal said it would record where foreign nationals travel and stay from their arrival until their departure.

Previously, records covered only arrivals and departures at airports, leaving authorities without information about the whereabouts or activities of foreigners who had not left the country. Lamsal said several foreign nationals had been found involved in criminal activities.

According to him, Nepal deported 459 foreign nationals for breaking the law in 2025 and another 540 between January 1 and October 10, 2026.

He also said 64 foreign nationals were sent back in 2025 for violating immigration laws, staying in Nepal for purposes inconsistent with their visas, being convicted under Nepali law or engaging in other illegal activities. Another 61 had been sent back for legal violations by October 10, 2026.

Lamsal said the system would support monitoring, regulation, management, security and travel facilitation, helping prevent foreigners from engaging in activities prohibited under immigration law or inconsistent with their visas.

The system was initially introduced on January 1, 2025, at star-rated hotels, travel agencies, money exchange businesses and other establishments in the Kathmandu Valley. It now applies across the country, he said.
