Missile attack on Riyadh airport kills 12, injures more than 300

Kathmandu, Oct 11: A missile attack on King Khalid International Airport in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, killed 12 people and injured more than 309 on Saturday.

Saudi Arabia’s civil aviation authority said the dead included four Saudi nationals, two Bangladeshis and one citizen each from the United States, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Palestine and Sudan. The injured are receiving treatment at hospitals across Riyadh. Flights and airport services have reportedly been suspended indefinitely.

The Saudi-led military coalition said another missile landed near King Fahd International Airport in the eastern city of Dammam.

Coalition spokesperson Turki al-Maliki called the attack a “war crime” and warned of decisive action against the Houthi rebels. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also condemned the attack and called for an end to violence against civilians.

Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels have not claimed responsibility. However, their military spokesperson, Yahya Saree, reposted an earlier warning concerning Saudi civil aviation on social media, describing it as a “reminder.”

US President Donald Trump said a decision would be made soon on whether the United States would join Saudi airstrikes against the Houthis.

According to the report, fighting between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis has intensified since a peace agreement collapsed in July. The Houthis have targeted Saudi airports, oil infrastructure and tankers, while the Saudi-backed coalition has stepped up retaliatory operations in Yemen. (Source: Agencies)
