Former King not to offer Dasain Tika to commoners this year

Kathmandu, October 11: Former King Gyanendra Shah will not offer Dasain Tika and Jamara to the general public on the occasion of Vijaya Dashami on October 21 this year.

The Press Secretariat said the programme to offer Tika and Jamara to the public has been suspended this year in view of the difficult circumstances caused by floods and landslides that have resulted in heavy losses of life and property in various parts of the country.

According to a press statement issued by the Press Secretariat at Nirmal Niwas, the former King has decided to celebrate Dashain in a simple manner, considering the thousands of people displaced, hundreds of lives lost and extensive, irreparable damage to physical property caused by an avalanche and severe flooding in Bhadra, followed by incessant rainfall in Ashoj.

The statement said: “Taking into account the difficult circumstances in which thousands of people have been displaced, hundreds have tragically lost their lives, and enormous and irreparable losses of life and property have occurred due to the severe flooding triggered by an avalanche last Bhadra and the incessant rainfall this Ashoj, His Majesty King Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev has decided to celebrate this year’s Bada Dashain festival in a simple manner, while maintaining his faith, beliefs and dignity.
