Kathmandu, Oct 6: Parliament begins scrutiny of 13 ambassador nominees today, with the Parliamentary Hearing Committee set to examine complaints filed against the candidates before conducting their hearings.
The committee will meet at 11:15 am to open five complaints received against the nominees. Members are also expected to receive copies of the nominees’ proposed work plans.
The committee had invited the public to submit complaints or relevant information, backed by evidence, concerning those recommended for diplomatic postings. The deadline was extended because of public holidays, and five complaints had been registered by Monday.
It remains unclear which of the 13 nominees are named in the complaints. The details are expected to emerge after the committee opens them at today’s meeting.
The committee decided on Asoj 8 to move ahead with the hearings following the Cabinet’s decision on Asoj 2 to recommend ambassadors to 13 countries.
Under the Cabinet decision, Dr Nischal Nath Pandey has been recommended for India, Dr Kalyan Raj Sharma for China, Chiranjeev Jung Thapa for the United States, Gaurav Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana for the United Kingdom and Saru Joshi for Germany.
The other nominees are Suresh Kumar Karna for Israel, Prapti Sherchan for Spain, Jignan Kumar Thapa for Japan, Dr Padmakshi Rana for Oman and Chudamani Kharel for Malaysia.
Prof Dr Sangam Shrestha has been recommended for South Korea, Dr Manchala Kumari Jha for Sri Lanka and Giri Bahadur Sunar for Saudi Arabia.
The committee will review the complaints before questioning the nominees as part of the mandatory parliamentary scrutiny process.
Once the hearings are completed, the committee will decide whether to endorse the nominees, clearing the way for the government to proceed with their appointments.
