Kathmandu, October 4: There are complaints from locals that the concerned authorities have not paid adequate attention to the preservation of historical heritage sites in Kanyam of Ilam, a popular tourist destination. A historical inscription inaugurated by then Crown Prince Birendra has deteriorated after being broken into pieces and is now kept in a makeshift condition due to lack of repair.
According to Hom Prasad Rijal, a staff member at Kanyam Tea Estate, the inscription installed during the monarchy was broken into pieces over time. The fragments had been scattered around the tea estate premises before they were later collected, pieced together and reinstalled.
“It was the inscription inaugurated by Birendra. It was later broken. Its pieces were found scattered here and there,” Rijal said. “Later, the company collected the pieces and put them back together.”
He also said that the first tea plant, known as the ‘Mother Bush’, planted in 2028 BS (1971–72 AD) by then Crown Prince Birendra and Crown Princess Aishwarya had also been cut down and destroyed.
He said coordination between the local government and the tea estate company was necessary for the preservation of historical heritage. Along with promoting tourism in Kanyam, the concerned authorities should also pay attention to preserving the historical structures and inscriptions located there, he said.
