Kathmandu, Oct 4: Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal left for Fiji on Saturday to participate in the Pre-COP-Leaders Event on climate change.

A four-member Nepali delegation led by Khanal departed to attend the event being held in Fiji and Tuvalu on October 5 and 6.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Khanal will address the Leaders Plenary on October 6. Before the session, he will also participate in a media question and answer programme jointly with the President of Palau and the prime ministers of Australia and Fiji.

The Pre-COP-Leaders Event aims to advance global dialogue and cooperation on climate change. Nepal’s participation is expected to provide an opportunity to raise issues concerning the impacts of climate change, climate justice and the particular concerns of mountainous countries on the international stage.

After attending the programmes in Fiji and Tuvalu, Khanal will travel to Australia.

He is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong on October 8. The meeting is expected to cover Nepal-Australia relations, bilateral cooperation and other issues of mutual interest.

During his visit to Australia, Khanal will also attend separate programmes organised by the Embassy of Nepal in Canberra and the Nepali diaspora in Sydney.

The Foreign Ministry said the programmes will provide Khanal with an opportunity to interact with members of the Nepali community living in Australia.

Khanal is scheduled to return to Nepal on October 12.
