300 Parbat families displaced after flood and landslides strike

PARBAT, Oct 4: Floods and landslides have forced 300 families from their homes in Parbat, damaging more than 300 houses and disrupting roads and public infrastructure across much of the district.

The District Administration Office said 170 houses were completely destroyed and 131 partially damaged, with six of Parbat’s seven local units affected.

Jaljala Rural Municipality suffered the heaviest damage. A total of 171 families have been displaced there, while 113 houses were severely damaged and another 58 remain at risk of landslides.

Elsewhere, 20 houses were destroyed in Phalewas Municipality, 15 in Modi Rural Municipality, nine in Bihadi Rural Municipality, and two each in Kushma Municipality and Mahashila Rural Municipality, Chief District Officer Ganga Bahadur Chhetri said.

The disaster has also damaged five school buildings as well as agricultural farms, temples, health facilities and police posts.

Transport infrastructure has also taken a hit. A suspension bridge linking Parbat and Baglung has been damaged, along with the Maldhunga bridge on the Mid Hill Highway.

Several rural roads remain blocked, making movement difficult in affected areas. Authorities said reopening the Phalewas Bihadi and Lunkhudeurali Huwas sections of the Kaligandaki Corridor could take several more days.

Relief efforts are underway for families forced from their homes. The district administration, local governments, Nepal Red Cross Society and other organisations have been distributing essential supplies.

Displaced families are receiving tarpaulins, food, cooking utensils and bedding, along with sanitation and medical supplies, as authorities continue to assess the extent of damage across the district.
