KATHMANDU: The government has released a list of its achievements during its first six months in office, highlighting reforms in governance, infrastructure, energy, diplomacy and public service delivery.
Prime Minister Balendra Shah took office on March 27, 2026 (Chaitra 13, 2082). His secretariat released a point-by-point account of the government’s work since then.
On governance reform, the government said it reduced the number of ministries from 22 to 18 by approving the Government of Nepal (Allocation of Business) Regulations, 2026 and restructuring ministries.
It has also conducted an organisational review aimed at abolishing or restructuring boards, committees and projects considered unproductive or having overlapping responsibilities.
The government introduced a “Zero Pending Files Week” in public offices, began implementing a 100-point governance reform agenda and signed performance indicator-based agreements with government secretaries. Reports concerning irregularities involving public land and cooperatives have also been taken up for implementation.
On infrastructure, the government listed the trial operation of the Nagdhunga Tunnel as an achievement. Physical progress on the Kathmandu Tarai/Madhesh Fast Track has reached 50.02 per cent, while the breakthrough of the Mahadevtar Tunnel has been completed.
The government said 35.16 kilometres of roads have been blacktopped in Kathmandu and remote areas, while 15 road bridges and 49 suspension bridges have been completed. Repair and strengthening work has also been completed on 133 government buildings damaged during protests.
Nepal’s installed electricity generation capacity has reached 4,258 MW, with 161 MW added over the past six months.
The government said Nepal exported 1,196 gigawatt hours of electricity during the current fiscal year, earning around Rs 10 billion in foreign currency. Irrigation facilities were also extended to an additional 2,948 hectares of land.
On diplomacy, the government said it invited applications through open competition for ambassadorial appointments for the first time and recommended 13 candidates. Around 2,000 Nepalis facing difficulties abroad were also rescued.
A high-level Nepali delegation attended the 81st United Nations General Assembly, where Prime Minister Shah raised issues including climate change, climate justice and risks facing the Himalayan region.
On public services, the government said citizens can now obtain passport and citizenship services from any district.
A government courier service delivering passports to people’s homes has been expanded to 75 districts.
The government has also linked birth registration, citizenship and national identity card databases to enable automatic filling of information across systems.
The process of issuing labour approvals for foreign employment has also been fully automated, according to the six-month progress report.
