Kathmandu, September 28: Four people have been confirmed dead after being caught in an avalanche on Mount Himlung in Manang on Sunday.
The search for those still unaccounted for was intensified from early Monday morning. Two of the deceased have been brought to Kathmandu, while the bodies of the other two have been brought to the district headquarters of Manang, according to Manang Chief District Officer Mukti Prasad Khanal.
Khanal said that although 11 people believed to have been caught in the avalanche had safely reached the district headquarters, the number of people still missing is estimated to be more than 10.
He said rescue teams had been deployed by helicopter to the suspected areas and that some updates could be provided by Monday afternoon.
According to Chief District Officer Khanal, two bodies were sent from the district headquarters to Teaching Hospital in Kathmandu on Monday morning for post-mortem examinations, while the other two bodies were being kept at the district headquarters.
The victims were workers from Expedition and Himalayan Holidays companies who had gone to the area to carry out work including constructing a base camp and fixing ropes.
