Kathmandu, Sept 28: Twenty-one people have died in floods and landslides triggered by heavy rainfall across Nepal, while five others have been injured and five remain missing.
According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, seven people were killed in 53 flood incidents. Another 14 people died in 256 landslide incidents, which also left four people injured and five missing.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall occurred in different parts of the country from September 24 to 27 (Asoj 8 to 11) due to a low-pressure system that developed over the Bay of Bengal.
Floods and landslides completely destroyed 143 houses across the country and partially damaged another 51.
The disasters directly affected 747 families, according to the authority. Nearly 2,000 people were evacuated from high-risk areas in various districts and moved to safer locations.
Continuous rainfall also produced exceptionally high precipitation totals across the country. More than 100 millimetres of rainfall was recorded at 186 monitoring stations.
Deda Gaun in Nawalparasi East recorded the highest rainfall at 544.2 millimetres. Panchase in Kaski received 500.2 millimetres, while Atraulitar in Tanahun recorded 472 millimetres, according to the authority.
