Kaski, Sept 27: Authorities have stepped up vigilance in Ramghat, Pokhara, after continuous rainfall increased the flow of the Seti River, causing water to accumulate and form a lake in the area.
As the water level continues to rise at Ramghat, squatter settlements along the riverbanks in Pokhara wards 9 and 11 have come under threat. Ramghat, Shantighat and cremation sites near a Buddhist monastery have also been inundated.
Kaski Assistant Chief District Officer Chitrangat Baral said security personnel have been deployed in settlements around Ramghat as a precaution. Police are continuously monitoring the river and surrounding areas.
According to Baral, officials of the District Security Committee, led by Chief District Officer Kumansingh Gurung, have conducted an on-site inspection of the Ramghat area.
“Local residents themselves have said that although the high-water flow has created a lake, as it has in the past, there is no need to panic at present,” Baral said. “We have deployed security personnel and are taking precautionary measures while assessing the risks. Given the current situation, people need to remain alert rather than panic. If the situation becomes dangerous, settlements on both sides of the river will be moved to safer locations.”
The accumulation of water in the Seti, which flows through the heart of Pokhara, has nevertheless caused concern among local residents.
Continuous rainfall has also disrupted several rural roads in Kaski district.
The Nayapul, Birethanti, Ghandruk road has been blocked after the Modi River eroded a section of the road at Syauli Bazaar in Annapurna Rural Municipality 8.
Rural municipality spokesperson Bharatman Gurung said the river washed away about 10 metres of the road at Syauli Bazaar on Friday evening.
The disruption has cut off the tourist destination of Ghandruk from Pokhara by road.
