Kathmandu, Sept 27: Nepal has sought additional time for its graduation from the United Nations’ list of least developed countries (LDCs).
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Prime Minister Balendra Shah requested meetings held on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
During his participation in the General Assembly, Prime Minister Shah met UN Secretary General António Guterres and raised the issue of extending Nepal’s deadline for graduation from LDC status.
“The issue of support for extending Nepal’s timeline for graduation from the list of least developed countries was discussed,” the Foreign Ministry said.
During the meeting, Secretary General Guterres also expressed condolences over the loss of lives and damage caused by the Bhotekoshi flood disaster.
Guterres said the United Nations stands in solidarity with Nepal on climate-related issues.
The Foreign Ministry said Nepal’s active participation in the United Nations and its engagements during the General Assembly had helped enhance the country’s international standing.
