Kathmandu: The dissident faction of the Nepali Congress has said it is preparing for the party’s 15th General Convention in “emergency mode” because of severe time constraints.
Speaking at a press conference held at the party’s contact office in Chundevi on Saturday, leader Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat said the faction had been forced to complete preparations for the convention within a short period.
Mahat said they had made efforts until the last moment to hold a unity convention, but those attempts had failed.
“We wanted the party to hold a unity convention and kept all doors open in an effort to make that happen. But when that was no longer possible, we began preparations in emergency mode,” he said.
Mahat said the Nepali Congress central general convention will be held on December 7, 8 and 9 (Mangsir 21, 22 and 23).
According to the approved schedule, ward level conventions will begin on October 1 (Asoj 15). Mahat acknowledged that continuous rainfall across the country in recent days had delayed some preparatory work.
He said the party would take an immediate decision if weather conditions or technical problems prevent all wards from holding their conventions on October 1 (Asoj 15). In wards where conventions cannot be held that day, arrangements have been made to complete them by October 2 or 3 (Asoj 16 or 17), in coordination with election officers deployed to the districts and district coordinators.
To complete the conventions quickly, election officers are being prepared to reach their assigned districts within the next one or two days. Mahat said local legal professionals or former teachers with previous experience in conducting elections would be mobilised for the process.
He urged party workers to proceed with preparations without hesitation, saying representatives and election officers appointed by the Election Committee would reach villages across the country within the prescribed timeframe.
The party has also arranged to immediately send online lists of active members whose memberships had been renewed, as well as newly registered members received until mid-January 2026 (Poush 2082), to the district and ward levels.
Mahat said new members who missed the opportunity to fill out the online membership form would also be allowed to obtain membership directly through their respective wards until October 1 (Asoj 15).
