Kathmandu, September 26: As the rain-bearing system moved westward, heavy rainfall occurred in various districts of Karnali Province. Simkot, the headquarters of Humla, recorded 114.8 millimetres of rainfall in the past 24 hours. The Meteorological and Climate Science Office in Surkhet said this was the heaviest rainfall recorded there since 1978.
According to office chief Dr. Indira Kandel, Simkot received 114.8 millimetres of rainfall in the 24-hour period from 1 p.m. Friday to 1 p.m. Saturday.
Previously, Simkot recorded 110 millimetres of rainfall in 2021 and 98 millimetres in 2015. Dr. Kandel said that 114.8 millimetres of rainfall was exceptional in the context of Humla and had broken the previous record.
Located at an altitude of 2,993 metres above sea level, Simkot has recorded rainfall for 14,113 days to date. According to data from the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, records show 3,794 days on which rainfall exceeded one millimetre.
According to the records, Simkot has experienced rainfall exceeding 100 millimetres on one day, more than 75 millimetres on six days, and more than 50 millimetres on 12 days.
Similarly, Dr. Kandel said Birendranagar in Surkhet recorded 75.5 millimetres of rainfall during the same 24-hour period.
Chief district officers of Humla, Jajarkot, Kalikot, Mugu, Jumla and Salyan said that heavy rainfall had triggered landslides at various locations in the respective districts.
