New York, Sept 25: Prime Minister Balendra Shah met United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres at UN headquarters ahead of his address to the 81st UN General Assembly.
The meeting took place at 6:30 pm local time, or 4:15 am Friday in Nepal, during the General Assembly’s high-level week.
Guterres expressed deep condolences over the loss of life and property in the Bhotekoshi disaster. He said the United Nations stood with Nepal on climate issues and praised the young members of the Nepali delegation.
Recalling a visit to Nepal as a tourist in 1978, Guterres said he would continue to support the country after leaving office.
Shah thanked Guterres for his goodwill towards Nepal and congratulated him on his tenure. He said the Bhotekoshi disaster had caused extensive damage and warned that the risk of glacial lake outburst floods remained high.
The two discussed relocating people living along riverbanks and rebuilding in an environmentally sustainable way. They also discussed support for extending the deadline for Nepal’s graduation from the list of least developed countries.
