Kathmandu, September 24: The Supreme Court has issued a mandamus order directing that political analyst Varat Dahal be released on bail and required to appear on a date fixed by the court.
A joint bench of Justices Kumar Regmi and Sunil Kumar Pokhrel issued the order while hearing a habeas corpus petition filed by Dahal’s daughter, Denika Dahal.
The Supreme Court ordered the Nepal Police Headquarters and the Cyber Bureau, Bhotahity, to release Dahal on a date fixed by the court, effective today, concluding that his statement had already been recorded and that there were no grounds or reasons to keep him in custody for further investigation.
On Tuesday, the Supreme Court had ordered that Dahal be produced before it along with the reasons for his arrest. In accordance with the order, Dahal was brought before the court on Thursday morning.
Police had detained Dahal from Sundarharaicha, Morang, on allegations of spreading misinformation about senior political figures. His daughter, Denika Dahal, had filed a habeas corpus petition demanding his release, arguing that her father had been illegally arrested and detained.
Advocates Dhruvalal Shrestha, Sher Bahadur KC, Kirtinath Sharma Poudel, Raju Shakya and Subash Singh Dhami, among others, had argued on behalf of the petitioner.
