Kathmandu, Sept 23: The United States has pledged an additional $31 million to support rehabilitation and reconstruction in flood-hit areas of Nepal.
The pledge was announced during a meeting in New York on Tuesday between Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal and US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Allison Hooker.
Hooker expressed condolences to those affected by the devastating floods. She also voiced sympathy for the families of around 70 Americans who remain unaccounted for.
According to the US State Department, Hooker announced that the United States would work with Congress to provide $10 million for permanent bridges in affected areas. She said the bridges, to be built by American companies, would help restore transport links damaged by the floods.
Also on Tuesday, Dr Joshua Walker, chief international affairs officer at the US Chamber of Commerce, met Khanal. They discussed expanding economic cooperation in Nepal and strengthening business ties between the two countries, according to the Foreign Ministry.
