Kathmandu, Sept 22: The Ministry of Education and Sports has decided to take action against teachers involved in political activities.
Education Minister Sasmita Pokharel issued the directive after reports of teachers’ political involvement appeared on social media. She also instructed authorities to monitor political activities by teachers in schools across the country.
Following the directive, the Education Development and Coordination Unit in Baitadi asked local governments to monitor teachers’ participation in political party programmes.
In a letter sent to all 10 local governments in the district, the unit said social media posts and other reports indicated that teachers from several schools had attended political events.
It asked the local authorities to closely monitor whether teachers under their jurisdiction were participating in party activities. The unit also directed them to take legal action if teachers were found violating the professional conduct standards set by education laws, regulations and recent government directives.
The letter was issued by Baitadi unit chief Dasharath Dutta Bhatta, with a copy sent to the Ministry of Education and Sports.
The Education Development and Coordination Unit in Sindhuli has issued a similar directive to local governments, calling for action against teachers and employees of community schools found actively participating in political programmes.
The unit wrote to Dudhauli Municipality and Sunkoshi and Tinpatan rural municipalities after receiving information through social media and other sources about teachers and school employees attending party events.
A letter issued by unit chief and Undersecretary Dinesh Prasad Devkota identified four teachers and employees whose political involvement was indicated by social media posts. They were named as Prem Prasad Bhattarai, Sarveshwar Koirala, Arjun Kumar Gautam and Yatiraj Timalsina.
The unit said such activities violated the Education Regulations, 2002, including its tenth amendment. It asked the local governments to take action against those involved under existing law and immediately inform the unit about the steps taken.
A copy of the letter was also sent to the Department of Education under the Ministry of Education and Sports.
