Kathmandu, Sept 21: Former Nepali Congress Vice President Purna Bahadur Khadka has said the party is certain to split unless a miracle occurs.
“If no miracle happens, the party’s split is certain. Even so, we are making a final effort to prevent it,” Khadka wrote on social media on Sunday.
He expressed concern that a division in the country’s largest party, which has a long history of fighting for democracy, would seriously harm Nepal’s democratic system at a time when the country faces a difficult situation.
Khadka’s statement comes as the party’s two rival factions carry out parallel activities after announcing separate schedules for the 15th General Convention. He said efforts were still underway to prevent a possible split.
Explaining his absence from the convention process, Khadka said he had sought a judicial review and that the case remained pending before the Supreme Court.
“The court granted us permission to seek a review after finding errors in the procedure followed by the Election Commission and the division bench’s decision. The case is now pending before the Supreme Court,” Khadka wrote.
“I want to make it clear to everyone concerned that I have not participated in the convention because I believe joining the Nepali Congress convention initiated under Gagan Thapa’s leadership under these circumstances would be deeply unethical.”
Khadka said two separate conventions now appeared likely because the court had not ordered a halt to the schedule, despite the filing of a petition seeking such an order.
He urged the Supreme Court to treat the pending review petition seriously and give it priority.
The Nepali Congress is holding its general convention from October 2, while the dissident faction has announced that it will hold a separate convention in December.
