New Delhi, Sept 12: The 18th BRICS Summit begins today at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, India.
The two-day summit brings together Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, India, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates.
Discussions will cover global governance, multilateralism, trade and investment, technology, food and energy security, health, disaster management and supply chains. India is chairing BRICS in 2026. The theme for this year’s summit is “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.”
The summit is being attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el Sisi, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim are also attending. Brazil and Saudi Arabia have sent foreign minister level representatives.
Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla and Nigerian Vice President Kashim Shettima have also arrived in New Delhi to attend the summit.
World Health Organization Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and World Trade Organization Director General Ngozi Okonjo Iweala are also participating.
During the summit, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with several foreign leaders. His meetings are expected to include Chinese President Xi Jinping, the Abu Dhabi Crown Prince, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung.
BRICS has emerged as an important platform for economic and other forms of cooperation among major emerging economies.
Prime Minister Modi has expressed confidence that the summit will produce positive and meaningful discussions focused on the interests of the global community.
