Kathmandu, Sept 7: The Nepali Congress establishment has finally agreed to a key demand raised by the camp led by former party president Sher Bahadur Deuba and leader Dr Shekhar Koirala.
A meeting of the party’s Central Working Committee held at the party headquarters in Sanepa on Sunday decided not to make digital updating of active party membership mandatory, addressing a longstanding demand of the Deuba and Koirala camps.
Under the decision, active members who have renewed their membership for the 15th General Convention but have not yet completed the digital updating process will also be eligible to participate in the convention.
Party President Gagan Thapa had met former acting president Purna Bahadur Khadka and leader Dr Shekhar Koirala on Saturday evening. A party office bearer said Sunday’s decision was taken following their request. The move has increased pressure on the Deuba and Koirala camps to participate in the 15th General Convention.
Party spokesperson Devraj Chalise said the meeting decided to allow members who have renewed their active membership but whose records have yet to be digitally updated to take part in the upcoming convention.
Chalise told Ratopati that all renewed active members whose records could not be updated for technical reasons will be allowed to participate, except those who have violated party discipline, left the party or died. He said the decision was intended to bring a larger number of party members into the convention process.
The Deuba camp, however, has raised another condition.
Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat, a leader from the camp, said their main demand for a consensus remains that the leadership elected at the 14th General Convention should be allowed to conduct the 15th General Convention.
“This decision alone does not create the possibility of consensus. Our main demand is that the leadership elected by the 14th General Convention should conduct the 15th General Convention. That demand must be addressed for consensus,” Mahat told Ratopati.
The Central Working Committee meeting has been adjourned and will resume at 1 pm on Monday.
