Kathmandu, Sept 6: An estimated 7,570 houses across the country were destroyed by the Bhotekoshi flood on August 26, according to a preliminary assessment.
The Rapid Preliminary Damage and Needs Assessment report prepared by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority shows that 32,933 people were directly affected based on the number of damaged households.
Authority spokesperson Shanti Mahat said the figures are preliminary and a detailed damage assessment is still pending.
The flood also caused extensive damage to government and public infrastructure. According to the report, 48 government buildings were damaged, including 35 destroyed and 13 partially damaged.
The education sector suffered damage to 18 schools, with 11 completely and seven partially damaged. Seven health facilities were also affected, including four completely and three partially damaged.
In physical infrastructure, 55 kilometres of roads were completely damaged. The flood also damaged 37 motorable bridges and 68 suspension bridges, Mahat said.
In agriculture, an estimated 1,806 hectares of farmland were damaged, resulting in a projected loss of 7,686 metric tonnes of food production. Livestock and poultry businesses were also heavily affected across all five impacted districts.
The energy and financial sectors have also suffered significant losses. The flood disrupted 783 megawatts of electricity generation, damaging 13 hydropower projects, one solar plant and two transmission lines.
The authority also reported damage to 17 bank branches in the affected areas.
