Kathmandu, September 4: Followers of the Vedic Sanatan Dharma are celebrating the festival of Shri Krishna Janmashtami across the country today by worshipping and offering prayers to Lord Krishna with devotion and reverence.
As Lord Krishna, the proponent of Gyan Yoga, Karma Yoga and Bhakti Yoga, was born at midnight on the Ashtami, or eighth day, of the dark fortnight of Bhadra during the Dwapara Yuga, today is known as Shri Krishna Janmashtami and the night as Moharatri. On this day, Krishna temples across the country hold worship and prayer ceremonies, religious discourses, and devotional singings. In particular, both women and men observe a fast and traditionally remain awake throughout the night.
Born as the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu to protect humanity from injustice, oppression and demonic tendencies, Lord Krishna remained on the side of truth throughout his life and inspired humanity to engage in righteous deeds.
The Shrimad Bhagavad Gita, which was spoken by Lord Krishna himself while he was advising Arjuna, one of the Pandavas, during the battle against the Kauravas at Kurukshetra, is regarded as a sacred scripture. Commonly known simply as the Gita, the scripture is believed to have been translated into more languages than any other book in the world.
According to Hindu scriptures, Lord Krishna displayed extraordinary divine acts from his childhood and vanquished demonic figures such as Putana, Kamsa, Jarasandha and Shishupala. On this occasion, a large fair is held today at the famous Krishna Temple in Mangal Bazaar, Patan.
