Kathmandu, Sept 2: The flood in Rasuwa has caused more than Rs 50 billion in damage to the tourism sector alone, according to Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Khadkaraj Paudel (Ganesh).
Minister Paudel disclosed the figure during a discussion held at the parliamentary International Relations and Tourism Committee on Wednesday.
He also informed the committee that the government plans to develop the flood-affected area as a “climate heritage” site under the ministry.
“We will develop the affected area as a climate heritage site under our ministry,” Paudel said. “We will consider whether to build a museum, monuments, a park, statues or something else as part of the heritage site.”
Paudel said Nepal had suffered a major disaster due to climate change and that people in many countries, not just Nepal, have been affected by climate-related disasters.
Providing a preliminary estimate of the damage, he said losses in the tourism sector alone were estimated at more than Rs 50 billion.
“We have made a preliminary assessment that the tourism sector has suffered losses of more than Rs 50 billion,” Paudel said. “We have also asked all businesses to submit reports detailing the damage they have suffered.”
