Kathmandu, Sept 2: Nepal participated in a high-level meeting held in Belgrade to mark the 65th anniversary of the first conference of heads of state and government of the Non-Aligned Movement.
Krishna Prasad Dhakal, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and leader of the Nepali delegation, addressed the meeting.
In his remarks, Dhakal said the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) remains an important source of guidance for a world facing growing complexity and multiple crises. He stressed the need to renew and reinvigorate the movement as conflicts, tensions, polarisation and divisions are once again increasing around the world.
He said Nepal continues to regard NAM as an important platform for addressing global challenges, including the arms race, economic inequality and the digital divide.
Calling for a fair, sustainable and peaceful world, Dhakal urged member states to take concrete and collective steps to strengthen multilateralism and international law by remaining united around the principles of the Non-Aligned Movement.
The meeting was attended by heads of state and government, foreign ministers and senior representatives from member countries.
During the event, Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Đurić expressed sadness over the devastating floods that recently hit Nepal and conveyed his condolences to the Government and people of Nepal. He expressed sympathy to the bereaved families and solidarity with those affected by the natural disaster.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Joint Secretary Dhakal met Angola’s Minister of External Relations Tete António to discuss bilateral and multilateral cooperation. He also held talks with Saudi Arabia’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Engineer Waleed A. M. Alkhuraiji, on matters of mutual interest.
Dhakal also met Andrej Šivjanović, international affairs adviser to Serbia’s Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management, and exchanged views on further strengthening Nepal Serbia cooperation in the agriculture and forestry sectors.
Earlier, Dhakal attended an official dinner hosted by Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić in honor of the heads of delegations.
