Kathmandu, August 31: Hak Ja Han, the leader of the Unification Church (Unification Peace Federation), has been sentenced to two years in prison by the Central District Court in Seoul.
The 83-year-old Han, who is also a former First Lady of South Korea, was found guilty in a corruption case, according to the BBC. Han is the wife of former President Yoon Suk Yeol.
The court found her guilty of illegally providing political donations and bribing a former first lady.
According to the BBC, prosecutors said their investigation had for the first time confirmed that the church had attempted to buy influence in politics.
They also released a photograph of cash worth approximately US$19 million that was reportedly found in Han’s personal safe.
Han’s Unification Church had extended its influence to Nepal as well. Former minister Eknath Dhakal had sought US$1.02 million from the church for running the Nepal Family Party and covering election expenses.
The Church had organized a peace event in Kathmandu by serving Holy Wine to K.P. sharma Oli and Madhav Kumar Nepal.
