As dengue risk rises, Red Cross launches mosquito hunt

Kathmandu, Aug 26: As dengue infections begin to rise in the capital, the Kathmandu District Chapter of the Nepal Red Cross Society has launched a “Find and Destroy Mosquito Breeding Sites” campaign in high-risk areas.

As part of the campaign, an awareness programme was held on Tuesday in vehicle workshops, fruit shops and scrap yards in Wards 16 and 17 of Kathmandu Metropolitan City and Ward 8 of Gokarneshwar Municipality.

Volunteers from Red Cross subchapters, members of Youth Red Cross Circles, female community health volunteers and residents actively participated in the campaign.

In Nepal, the period from Shrawan to Ashoj, roughly July to October, is considered the peak season for the proliferation of mosquitoes that transmit dengue.

The Nepal Red Cross Society said it would continue such awareness campaigns to prevent dengue infections from developing into an epidemic.
