Morang prison inmates protest, chant slogans after security search

Biratnagar, Aug 17: Tension erupted at Morang District Prison on Monday morning after security personnel conducted a search operation. Inmates housed in Block B of the prison in Hatkhola, Biratnagar 8, began protesting against the prison administration.

The inmates climbed onto the roof of the prison building and chanted slogans, demanding an end to alleged financial and mental exploitation inside the facility.

A large-scale search operation began early Monday following specific intelligence received by security agencies about illegal items, including drugs, being kept inside the prison.

The operation was carried out by a district security committee team led by Morang Chief District Officer Yubaraj Kattel and District Police Office Morang chief, Superintendent of Police Kabita Katuwal. A large number of security personnel were deployed for the operation.

SP Katuwal said the search was part of a routine security procedure.

“Searches are conducted inside the prison from time to time, keeping security concerns in mind. This operation is simply a continuation of that regular process,” she said.

During the search, the prison administration had planned to transfer some inmates considered suspicious to other locations. However, the process was halted for the time being after inmates strongly protested and obstructed the move.

Security has been tightened around the prison following the protest. A joint team of Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force has surrounded the prison and is maintaining security around the facility.
