ROLPA, Aug 16: The death toll from landslides in Rolpa has risen to 17 in the past five days after a 72-year-old woman was killed when a landslide buried her house in Lungri Rural Municipality 5 on Saturday night.
Police said Ammi Gurung was sleeping inside her home in Dhaireni when a landslide from above swept into the house and buried her. Her body was recovered with only her head visible under the debris, according to police inspector Krishna Shrestha of the District Police Office, Rolpa.
Police and local residents are continuing rescue and recovery efforts at the site. With Gurung’s death, the number of people killed in landslides in Rolpa since Wednesday has reached 17.
Twelve people were killed on Wednesday after a landslide swept through a settlement in Thabang Rural Municipality. One person remains missing, while two injured people are receiving treatment in Butwal.
On Thursday, four people were killed after landslides buried houses in Phalbang and Gitthe of Sunchhahari Rural Municipality 2.
The latest death has pushed the five-day landslide toll in eastern Rolpa to 17, while one person remains missing.
