Special cleaning program in Pashupatinath temple premises

Kathmandu, August 15: A special cleaning campaign conducted every Monday during the month of Shrawan under the “Safaa Garaun” (Let’s Clean) campaign run by Creation Nepal has concluded at the premises of Pashupatinath Temple.

More than 500 volunteers, students, sanitation workers and representatives of various partner organizations participated in the campaign, which was conducted during the year’s busiest period for religious pilgrimages.

Led by Creation Nepal with support from The Coca-Cola Foundation and in collaboration with the Pashupati Area Development Trust, the campaign helped manage waste and maintain cleanliness in the Pashupatinath Temple area, particularly in view of the increased flow of devotees during Shrawan.

As hundreds of thousands of devotees and visitors visit Pashupatinath throughout Shrawan, the campaign was launched to mobilize local staff and volunteers in waste management and cleaning, ensure proper disposal of waste, and encourage people not to litter. The initiative helped create a cleaner and more hygienic environment for devotees and visitors.

The closing ceremony was attended by Aditya Panda, Director of the Sustainability and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Value Addition Department; Ajay Konale, Managing Director of Bottlers Nepal Limited; Aruna Karki, Chairperson of Creation Nepal; Anand Mishra, founder of Creation; representatives of the Pashupati Area Development Trust; and other dignitaries.

Carlos Pagoaga, President of The Coca-Cola Foundation, said, “Collaboration is very important to improve waste management and encourage responsible behavior. Through the ‘Safaa Garaun’ campaign, we want to help local communities become more active and capable in managing waste properly. This will contribute to keeping public spaces clean and, in the long term, to fostering greater environmental responsibility.”

During the program held every Monday throughout Shrawan, volunteers worked alongside more than two dozen sanitation workers each week to collect and segregate waste. They also raised public awareness about proper waste management, the importance of cleanliness, and the need for collective efforts to preserve Nepal’s religious and cultural heritage.

Aruna Karki, Chairperson of Creation Nepal, expressed gratitude to everyone who contributed to the success of the campaign despite various challenges. She said, “Our goal is to expand the support and collaboration of The Coca-Cola Foundation nationwide in the coming days. ‘Safaa Garaun’ should not be viewed as a one-time program but as a continuous national campaign.”

Tirtha Prasad Shrestha, Member-Secretary of the Pashupati Area Development Trust, said, “We sincerely thank and express our gratitude to The Coca-Cola Foundation for its significant support and contribution to the environmental conservation and enhancement of the Pashupati area. We also look forward to similar support and cooperation in the coming days.”

As part of the program, benches made from recycled plastic bottles were also inaugurated. The initiative demonstrated in practice how plastic waste can be recycled and transformed into useful public amenities.

Volunteers, sanitation workers and partner organizations that contributed to the campaign were also honored at the event. The Pashupati Area Development Trust presented a letter of appreciation to The Coca-Cola Foundation for its continued support. Certificates of appreciation were also presented to volunteers and sanitation workers who actively participated in the campaign for four weeks.

Building on the momentum generated by the Shrawan campaign, the “Safaa Garaun” campaign will continue various cleaning and awareness activities until Haritalika Teej, which falls on September 14, 2026. The campaign aims to increase community participation, promote proper waste management and sustainable practices, and contribute to the preservation of Nepal’s cultural and religious heritage.
