Kathmandu, Aug 15: The US government has terminated Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for citizens of Nepal and several other countries.
According to US immigration authorities, Nepal’s TPS designation had already expired a year ago. However, no decision had been made on whether to terminate or extend the protection.
The US government has now decided to end TPS for Nepali citizens, saying there is no longer a legal basis to maintain the protection.
Under TPS, eligible citizens of designated countries were allowed to remain and work legally in the US for a specified period and were temporarily protected from deportation.
Following the termination of TPS, Nepali citizens who have no other valid immigration status may be required to leave the United States. The decision therefore creates uncertainty and potential risks for Nepalis currently living in the US under TPS.
The US government has also announced the termination of TPS for citizens of Haiti, Syria, Yemen, Afghanistan, Cameroon, Honduras, Nicaragua, Venezuela, South Sudan, Myanmar (Burma), Somalia and Ethiopia, among other countries.
TPS is a form of temporary legal protection granted by the US to citizens who cannot safely return to their home countries because of war, natural disasters or other extraordinary circumstances.
