Kathmandu, August 14: A total of 10 people who died after a landslide struck Kotlabara in Uwa, Thabang Rural Municipality-5 of Rolpa on Wednesday night have been found dead.
Police said five bodies were recovered from the incident site, while another five were found in Pyuthan after being swept away by floodwaters. Those killed in the incident range in age from a five-year-old child to an 85-year-old elderly person.
The tragedy occurred when a sudden landslide carrying mud and debris swept down from the upper part of Kotlabara village on Wednesday night, burying 11 houses and sheds. Three people are still missing and a search operation is underway.
Two seriously injured people are receiving treatment in Butwal. Twenty-two-year-old Himal Pun Magar and 25-year-old Sanjay Gharti Magar survived after fleeing when the landslide struck. They were the ones who informed the police about the incident by calling the emergency number 100 during the night.
The bodies recovered at the incident site have been identified as those of 18-year-old Shanti Pun Magar, 60-year-old Kamal Bahadur Pun Magar, 80-year-old Manrakhi Pun Magar, 75-year-old Dal Bahadur Pun Magar and 85-year-old Hastakala Roka Magar.
Similarly, five more bodies were recovered from various locations along the Lungri River in Rolpa and the Madi River in Pyuthan, according to Police Inspector Krishna Shrestha, information officer at the District Police Office, Dolpa, who spoke to Nepal Khabar.
Those whose bodies were found in Pyuthan have been identified as 38-year-old Jun Kumari Pun Magar (Bishnu Pun), five-year-old Ashok Pun Magar, 80-year-old Bal Bahadur Pun Magar, 66-year-old Mani Pun Magar and 34-year-old Mahendra Gharti.
The seriously injured Himal and Sanjay were taken to the Provincial Hospital in Butwal for further treatment after receiving initial treatment at the Primary Health Centre in Sulichaur.
“The landslide buried nine houses, one mobile shop, two cattle sheds and a church,” Shrestha said.
