Kathmandu, Aug 14: A habeas corpus petition has been filed at the Supreme Court challenging the arrest of Kishor Shrestha, editor of Janastha Weekly. The petition, filed on Thursday, has been scheduled for a hearing before a single bench of Justice Balkrishna Dhakal.
Police arrested Shrestha from his residence in Nakkhu, Lalitpur, on Wednesday evening. A complaint has reportedly been filed against him at the Kathmandu District Police Office on charges related to cybercrime and violation of personal privacy. Based on the complaint, the Kathmandu District Court granted the police permission on Thursday to keep Shrestha in custody for three days.
On the day of his arrest, police searched both Shrestha’s residence and the Janastha Weekly office, seizing computers and other electronic devices. A police team that returned to his residence on Thursday reportedly took CCTV camera devices and storage equipment as well.
Shrestha is a former chairperson of the Press Council Nepal and former general secretary of the Federation of Nepali Journalists.
