Former Nepali Congress president Sher Bahadur Deuba is set to address a three-day national gathering being organized by the disgruntled faction of the party.
Dr. Shashank Koirala, coordinator of the National Gathering Organizing Committee, announced at a press conference in Kathmandu on Friday that Deuba would address the gathering, which will be held in Kathmandu from Shrawan 29 to 31.
Deuba, who went abroad for medical treatment last Falgun after being injured during the Gen Z movement, is returning home from Hong Kong on the evening of Shrawan 26 (August 11). It has been decided that Deuba will address the national gathering immediately after his return.
After the Gen Z movement, Deuba had handed over his responsibilities to then party vice president Purna Bahadur Khadka and had not openly participated in public programs organized by any faction of the party. However, amid the growing crisis in the party, he is now set to become active again in a gathering of his faction.
Koirala said the gathering of the disgruntled faction in Kathmandu would determine the party’s unity and future course of action in the current political situation.
He said, “The Nepali Congress national gathering is being organized in Kathmandu from Shrawan 29 to 31, 2083, to determine the party’s future course of action with complete unity in the current political situation of the country. The gathering will also be addressed by respected party president Sher Bahadur Deuba.”
Welcoming the Supreme Court’s decision to grant permission for a review of the case concerning the legitimacy of the Nepali Congress Central Working Committee, he expressed confidence that justice would be delivered through the review.
He said, “We welcome the Supreme Court’s decision to allow the review petition filed by party president Sher Bahadur Deuba. We are confident that justice will be delivered through the review by the Supreme Court.”
Koirala said he did not expect Deuba to face any detention or harassment by the state upon his return to Nepal. He said, “I don’t think he will face such detention when he returns. But if that happens, we will protest against it.”
He also said that Shekhar Koirala, who is leading a separate faction within the party, supports the gathering. Koirala said, “Shekhar dai is busy with the construction of his house in Biratnagar, so he could not attend. But he also fully supports this national gathering.”
Purna Bahadur Khadka, a leader of the faction, was absent from the press conference organized by gathering committee coordinator Koirala. Koirala said Khadka could not attend the press conference because he was not in good health.
