Foreign Minister Khanal returns home from China

Kathmandu, June 18: Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal returned home on Wednesday night after completing a four-day official visit to China.

He had arrived in Beijing on Sunday at the friendly invitation of Chinese Foreign Minister and Member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, Wang Yi.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Minister Khanal held bilateral talks with Foreign Minister Wang on Monday during the visit.

A press release issued by the ministry stated that the two sides held extensive and productive discussions on all aspects of Nepal–China bilateral relations during talks between the delegations of the two countries.

“Both sides shared a common understanding on further strengthening Nepal–China relations based on mutual friendship, goodwill, and cooperation. Reiterating the Government of Nepal’s commitment to the One-China principle, the Nepali side made it clear that Nepal’s territory would not be allowed to be used against China’s interests,” the statement said. “The Chinese side reiterated the Chinese Government’s firm support for Nepal’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence, and expressed confidence in its full support for the priorities identified by the Government of Nepal in the areas of good governance and economic development.”

The two sides also reaffirmed their commitment to mutual respect and sensitivity toward each other’s priorities and concerns. Discussions were held on expanding cooperation in a wide range of areas, including infrastructure, connectivity, border management, energy, trade, investment, agriculture, technology transfer, information technology and digitalization, tourism, chemical fertilizers, petroleum and natural gas exploration, and people-to-people relations.

The ministry further stated that both sides emphasized the early implementation of previously agreed bilateral programs and projects and stressed the importance of advancing cooperation on issues of common interest in multilateral and regional forums.

Following the talks, Minister Khanal attended a banquet hosted by Foreign Minister Wang.

Earlier the same day, Minister Khanal also held a meeting with Liu Haixing, Head of the International Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China.
