Kathmandu, April 5: Bhaktapur police rounded up 60 people on Saturday during a one-day “sweep” targeting public safety and security in anticipation of the Biska Jatra festival.
Superintendent Surya Bahadur Khadka, head of the Bhaktapur District Police Office, said officers acted across the district, deploying personnel from two police circles, local divisions, and posts.
Khadka explained, “We have previously conducted these operations, and we have now relaunched the sweep with full mobilisation of all units.” “Anyone found not linked to criminal conduct will be freed after checks.”
Police reported that the detainees were suspected of disrupting public order through suspicious activities, drug use, congregating in groups for unlawful purposes, and causing general disturbances.
Officials clarified that the sweep aims primarily to maintain community safety. They also noted that the measure aligns with preparations for the upcoming Biska Jatra, stressing the need for heightened monitoring.
Khadka anticipates that the operation will alleviate public anxiety and guarantee a peaceful festival.
