New MPs take oath of office

Kathmandu, March 26: The newly elected members of the House of Representatives have taken their oath of office and secrecy today. The senior-most member, Nepali Congress MP Arjun Narsingh KC, administered the oath on Thursday in a temporary assembly hall established within the multipurpose building of the Parliament House at Singha Durbar.

While attending the swearing-in ceremony, the Members of Parliament were dressed in attire reflecting their respective cultural heritages.

The Chairman of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), Rabi Lamichhane, also took the oath. However, as cases involving money laundering and organized crime are still pending against him, he will remain a suspended Member of Parliament despite having taken the oath.

In the 275-member House of Representatives, the RSP has won a single-party majority with 182 seats. The RSP is set to form a new government tomorrow. The party will elect senior leader Balendra Shah (Balen) as its parliamentary party leader today, following which Balen will become the Prime Minister on March 27.
